Is Your Business Ready? Summer Commercial Power Outage Preparedness

Evolution Electric Inc • May 26, 2026

Summer in California brings sunshine, longer days, and unfortunately, an increased risk of commercial power outages. As temperatures climb in Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, and surrounding communities, energy demand surges. Unplanned blackouts and proactive utility shutoffs can leave local businesses scrambling to protect assets, serve customers, and maintain productivity. Is your business prepared to weather these outages, or are you leaving your operations vulnerable to costly downtime?

Why Summer Power Outages Are a Growing Concern for California Businesses

Power interruptions are no longer rare events in Northern California. With the ongoing risks of wildfires, extreme heat, and strain on the state’s grid, utility providers often implement Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) affecting Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Rocklin, and beyond. For restaurants, offices, warehouses, and industrial facilities, even a few hours without electricity can result in lost revenue, spoilage, security gaps, and data loss.

Key Steps for Commercial Power Outage Preparedness

Local business owners can greatly reduce risks by adopting a summer power outage preparedness plan. Evolution Electric Inc recommends the following action items:

Evaluate Your Electrical System: Schedule an inspection with a licensed electrician to identify vulnerabilities within your current setup.
Backup Power Solutions: Install alternative power generating systems such as standby generators or solar with battery storage. These systems ensure critical operations continue, whether for hours or days.
Surge Protection: Protect sensitive equipment from damage caused by sudden power loss and restoration with whole-building surge protection.
Emergency Lighting: Upgrade to energy-efficient, code-compliant emergency lighting systems to keep employees and customers safe during blackouts.
EV Charger Backup: For businesses with electric vehicle chargers, ensure backup solutions are integrated so fleet operations or customer charging needs are not interrupted.
Communication Plans: Develop a strategy to alert staff and clients in advance of outages and provide updates during events.

Local Expertise Matters

Each city and region in the Sacramento Valley faces unique challenges. For example, Elk Grove and Woodland businesses might contend with different grid vulnerabilities than those in Lincoln or Fair Oaks. A local expert like Evolution Electric Inc, whose owner Vito Ilagan brings 26 years of electrical experience, offers in-depth knowledge of area electrical codes, weather risks, and utility practices. This experience ensures your preparedness plan is tailored for your location, from North Highlands to Davis and Orangevale to Carmichael.

Seasonal Planning Tips for May and the Summer Ahead

May is the ideal month for local businesses to get ahead of the curve before the first major heatwave or wildfire warning hits. Consider these seasonal best practices:

Schedule professional assessments before Memorial Day closes out the spring.
Review insurance plans for coverage related to outages and equipment damage.
Use quieter periods to train staff on emergency procedures and safe equipment shutdowns.
